Arizona fishing report: The Reel Deal
Top picks for this weekend in the high country include Lower Lake Mary in Flagstaff, which still has good fishing conditions. In fact, fishing is excellent in this region considering fishing typically tails off as the water temperatures warm. Other great bets include City Reservoir, Dogtown Reservoir, Upper Lake Mary (walleye), Ashurst Lake and Frances Short Pond. Get to this region while fishing is good.
White Mountains rundown
Can’t forget the White Mountains this time of the year. Try Big Lake, Bear Canyon Lake, Willow Springs Lake, or Woods Canyon Lake. Veronica Corbett, our Lakes Biologist out of the Pinetop region, said that overall the Mogollon Rim lakes are looking likes better bets than the east-side lakes. Other suggestions for the weekend include Silver Creek just outside of Show Low and Show Low Creek (below the dam), Fool Hollow Lake, and Show Low Lake. In the White Mountains, consider the East Fork of the Black River, the Little Colorado River in Greer and Bunch Reservoir.
Don’t forget the Rim creeks: Every week, we’ve been stocking Canyon Creek, Christopher Creek (this final scheduled stocking of the summer season is this week), the East Verde River, Haigler Creek, and Tonto Creek.
Be safe: watch the weather
Another reminder: Monsoon season is here so please be safe. Watch for flash flooding. Get off the water if there’s lightning and if you get trapped on the water, find a protected cove or small bay and wait out the storm.
- Bassmaster Magazine has ranked the top 100 Best Bass Lakes again this year. In the Western region, Arizona had several in the top 15 — Lake Havasu, Roosevelt Lake, the Lower Colorado River, and Alamo Lake! Lake Mohave, Lake Mead and Lake Pleasant also made the top 25. See the full list.
- Heading into late summer, the best bass bite in general will be from 6 p.m. through the night. The top-water bite has finally turned on at both Bartlett and Lake Pleasant and probably Roosevelt Lake as well.
- Access to Apache Lake remains closed.
