Arizona fishing report: The Reel Deal
Water temperatures have dropped statewide to the low-50s at lakes such as Roosevelt. Bass metabolism slows considerably in the mid-50s. But trout love it. And we’re about to stock some big ones.
Next week, incentive trout are coming that week to Community Fishing Program waters. These rainbow trout are expected to average 1 pound and 13-16 inches in total length. These stockings will take place during 2 days that week. See the stocking schedule — all the “Core”waters marked to receive trout that week are scheduled to get these larger-than-average fish.
Know your winter tactics — it’s not an easy time to catch bass. With typical wintertime water temperatures in the 50s, a largemouth bass becomes lethargic and may feed once at first light and be satisfied for a couple days.
This isn’t to say avoid bass fishing. Just be prepared. And fish slowly.
New year, new quest: bass and catfish challenges begin
Ready to catch a really big fish, conserve fisheries, and possibly win prizes and notoriety? Take the Hawg Bass or Fat Cat challenge. Read all about them.
Crappie are heading deep and grouping into larger schools near large pods of baitfish, as they tend to do during the winter. Try Alamo, Bartlett or Roosevelt lake during a stretch of warm, steady weather.
