Arizona Fishing Report: The Reel Deal
Top picks for the weekend include trout-stocked waters such as our “core” Community fishing waters, or crappie fishing at Alamo, Roosevelt or Bartlett lakes.
Fishing at Lake Pleasant can be good if you can find some active stripers, white bass or largemouth bass. Hit the northern coves such as Castle Creek, Coles or Humbug or Agua Fria and remember the closure for nesting bald eagles is in effect in the Agua Fria arm. The ticket is probably fishing live shad deep if you can get them.
At Canyon Lake, the new boat dock at the Palo Verde launch ramp at Canyon Lake is complete! This project was implemented by AZGFD and split-funded with the Tonto National Forest. This is another great example of “user pays,” where the public’s previous purchases of motorboat fuel, watercraft, fishing equipment, fishing licenses and federal-area use fees are being put back into facilities for the public’s enjoyment.
The dock was not only completely replaced, but also extended by 40 feet to provide more boat tie-up space, and widened to better assist with boat launching.
The lake was stocked with trout the week of Dec. 10 and is scheduled to be stocked again the week of Jan. 14.
Utah DWR waives requirement for Utah Lake Powell Stamp
As of Jan. 1, 2019, a Utah stamp will no longer be required for fishing on Lake Powell, the red-rock fishing destination and geological wonder that straddles the Utah-Arizona border. This means some anglers will save on what had been an $8 stamp. Read more.
Coming soon: Incentive trout at Community waters
Mark the week of Jan. 7-12 on your calendars. Incentive trout are coming that week to Community Fishing Program waters!
These rainbow trout are expected to average 1 pound and 13-16 inches in total length. These stockings will take place during 2 days that week.
See the stocking schedule — all the “Core”waters marked to receive trout that week are scheduled to get these larger-than-average fish.
