Region 2 Fishing Report 5/17/17
Dogtown Lake
I was on Dogtown Saturday afternoon talking to anglers. With the high winds everyone was fishing around the point near the day-use area. Folks were catching fish green garlic powerbait on Saturday. Jeffrey F. was fishing the middle of the day on Monday and caught this 23.5 inch rainbow.
Kaibab Lake
About 17,000 Rainbow Trout have been stocked this year. Folks were catching Trout on Saturday on different all of the different colors of powerbait with garlic green working best. I also talked to some folks who catching fish on worms. Stocked this week. We expect to add a bonus stocking of Rainbow Trout later in the week.
Ashurst Lake
Ashurst is full and we have stocked about 31,000 Rainbow Trout in the lake along with about 5,000 smaller Brown trout and some smaller Cutthroat Trout. 9,000 of those Rainbow Trout were bonus fish stocked Wednesday. Folks fishing with small spinners and spoons were catching fish while we were stocking on Wednesday.
Frances Short Pond
Frances Short Pond was stocked last week and will be stocked this week. Folks were catching fish on Garlic rainbow powerbait when I was out checking the Pond on Monday afternoon. Folks were also catching fish on worms, and salmon eggs. I also talked to some folks who were catching fish on pistol petes, and white roostertails. The first stocking of Channel Catfish should occur later this week. Scheduled to be stocked this week.
Lower Lake Mary
Lower Lake Mary has had about 22,000 larger (10 + inch) Rainbow Trout stocked in the last couple of weeks along with about 12,000 smaller (6-8 inch) Rainbow Trout. The stockings of Rainbow Trout contained some really nice trout with one being measured at about 18 inches. Fishing is starting to pick up a little bit with some fish being caught on powerbait. I had a report from a fly angler who was catching some nice size trout on leach patterns.
