Fishing Reports: Roosevelt Lake, Mogollon Rim lakes, Green Valley Lake
The recent full moon phase will add to the spawning process for the next several weeks on Roosevelt Lake, therefore, the fishing conditions remain excellent. Both bass and crappie spawns are underway with anglers reporting that many fish can be seen in less than 5-foot deep water. The lake level remains at 58% full and the water temperature is in the mid 60’s. The water flows into the lake from the Salt River and the Tonto Creek continue to be a concern. Both the Salt River and Tonto Creek are flowing at less than 10% of normal rates for this time of year. The water is extremely clear throughout the lake making “sight fishing,” one of the most popular techniques of anglers.
Fry are just beginning to be seen in the brush of coves. After hatching, the fry will be attracted to brush for safety and for nutrients from the moss growing on the brush. During this time, the male bass will guard the fry for several days before leaving them to survive on their own. All bass do not spawn at the same time, so the three phases of pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn will all be going on for the next several weeks. Bass in a pre-spawn or post-spawn phase and can be caught in 15-30 foot depths on reaction baits, artificial worms, jigs and crawdad baits.
Mogollon Rim lakes and stream open
The lack of snow on the Rim is allowing access to lakes and streams which normally would be closed during this time of year. There are no winter stockings of trout into lakes and streams north of Payson but there are native trout and “hold-over” trout (those that survived from prior years stockings) that offer a great challenge to experienced trout anglers.
Fishing excellent at Green Valley Lakes in Payson
Fishing reports from Green Valley Lake in Payson are also excellent. Trout are stocked into the lake as part of the AZGFD Community Fishing Program. The AZGFD recently reported that the Community Fishing Program trout stockings into Green Valley Lakes will continue for an additional six to eight weeks depending on weather conditions. Flies of all kinds are being reported successful, Powerbait in the green and yellow color and salmon eggs will catch a limit of trout at Green Valley Lake.
Have a great week of fishing and I hope to see you on the water.
