Fishing Report: Roosevelt Lake, Mogollon Rim streams
Roosevelt Lake report
The most popular talk among Rim Country anglers in recent weeks has been the wind. With gusts as high as 40 mph, anglers are having a hard time figuring out patterns and keeping their boats on a specific spot. The wind is also impacting the water clarity which is now ranging from slightly stained to chocolate brown in some areas. The water level is falling at Roosevelt Lake and the current level stands at 56% full which is down 1% during the past week. The level has dropped slightly over one vertical foot since the beginning of April. The flows into the lake from the Salt River and Tonto Creek are at 12% for this time of year and the water temperature is in the mid to high 60s.
With the wind and stained water, anglers are focused on secondary points and inside coves in lieu of deep water structure. The majority of bass are being caught in 15-25 foot depths. Anglers are reporting that slower moving baits such as a drop-shot, Texas-rig and a Senko artificial worm are out-catching reaction baits recently. Crappie anglers are reporting success on John-Deere and black, blue and chartreuse colored 1/16 oz. weighted hooks. Live minnows are also being reported as successful by crappie anglers.
Rim Country streams: stockings underway
The AZGFD Summer Trout Stocking program of Rim Country streams is officially underway. All of Rim Country streams will be stocked weekly with edible rainbow trout for the next several months. Stream trout anglers are reporting a good bite on Powerbait, flies and spinner-baits in a size 0.
Payson Wildlife Fair at Green Valley lakes
On Saturday, May 12, Green Valley Park comes alive with a multitude of wildlife and outdoor fun activities for the whole family at the 24th Annual Payson Wildlife Fair. Catch a monster-sized trout, cruise the lake in a canoe, try your hand at archery, or touch a live snake… there is something for everyone. People come from all over the State for this outdoor event. It’s a great day up in the cool mountain air of Payson at a time of year when the Valley is really heating up. And, it’s all free. Thanks to the Mogollon Sporting Association, Green Valley Lake will receive an additional stocking of trout in preparation for the Fair. No fishing license is required for fair attendees, and equipment and bait are provided at the free fishing booth at the fair.
Immediately following the Wildlife Fair, the Town of Payson Expo and the Wild West Bass Trail Team Championship final day weigh-in will begin. The Expo will begin at 2:00 PM with lots of games, food, entertainment and music. The Wild West “pre-game” television show will begin at 3:00 PM leading up to the weigh-in which will be a live pod-cast beginning at 4:00 PM. Anglers will be available for talks, signing autographs, interviews, etc. This will be a fantastic event for all of Rim Country to enjoy, so mark your calendar for May 12th at Green Valley Park.
Have a great week of fishing and I hope to see you on the water.
