Fishing Report: Roosevelt Lake & Mogollon Rim
The water level in Roosevelt Lake remains at 39% full, and continues to rise slightly each day. The Salt River and the Tonto Creek flows rates have dropped off significantly due to the lack of recent moisture. The Salt River is flowing at 160 CFS which equates to 60% of its normal flow for this time of year, while the Tonto Creek is flowing at 19 CFS or about 90% of its normal rate.
The water temperature at Roosevelt Lake is continuing to drop and is now in the low to mid 60s in the morning increasing to the high 60s during the afternoons. Anglers are reporting excellent late fall, early winter fishing conditions. The bass are feeding heavily in preparation for the approaching colder water temperatures. Reaction baits such as crankbaits, jerk-baits, spinner baits are all working in water depths of 25 feet or less. Some bass have moved to deeper portions of the lake where casting spoons, jigs and Texas-rigged baits are producing excellent fishing days.
Crappie fishing is also being reported as excellent. Large schools of crappie can be found isolated in coves or pockets. Schools may be difficult to locate for novice crappie anglers, however, when one is located it can make the trip worth while. November is an excellent time of year for crappie fishing due to the stable water levels and consistent calm sunny days. Crappie will always relate to cover such as brush, submerged trees, rock piles or artificial habitat. Successful anglers are reporting catching crappie in 20 to 40 foot depths.
Mogollon Rim trout fishing reported as excellent
Trout fishing on all Rim Lakes is being reported as very good to excellent. Anglers reported catching several really large brown trout in Ashurst Lake last week. AZGFD recently announced a week delay in trout stocking to Green Valley Lakes in Payson. The temporary delay is due to non-fish related issues at the fender’s facility. The AZGFD Community fishing program stocking will be back on schedule with a few weeks. Fishing at Green Valley Lakes continues to be great fun for the entire family. PowerBait on a small hook, light line and a light or ultra-light power fishing rod will improve your chances of catching trout.
Have a great week of fishing and I hope to see you on the water.
