Fishing Report: Roosevelt Lake, Green Valley Lakes, Mogollon Rim streams
Roosevelt Lake water level currently stands a 57% full and the amount of water being released for downstream needs is on the increase. The flows into the lake from the Salt River and Tonto Creek are less than 10% for this time of year. The temperature is in the mid to high 60’s with the clarity being mostly clear with areas of a greenish tint due to isolated algae blooms.
The majority of crappie and bass are in less than 25-foot depths due to the on-going spawning activities for both species. Before and after the spawn, bass feed heavily and anglers are reporting memorable days of bass fishing. Reaction baits such as a spinner-bait, chatter-bait, jerk-bait and crank-bait have all be reported successful. Artificial worms, jigs and crawdad imitation baits using a drop-shot or Texas-rig technique are being reported successful in 25-foot depths or less. Crappie anglers are reporting success on John-Deere and black, blue and chartreuse colored 1/16 oz weighted hooks. Live minnows are also being reported as successful by crappie anglers.
The AZGFD Summer Trout Stocking program of Rim Country streams is officially underway. All of Rim Country streams will be stocked weekly with edible rainbow trout for the next several months. AZGFD Aquatics Branch is once again demonstrating leadership, conservation and wildlife planning for endangered species by stocking Gila Tout into Chase Creek just outside of Payson. Many angler groups have supported the efforts to establish trout into remote streams that have become void of trout due to wildfires, runoff and flooding.
Green Valley Lake in Payson will receive two more stockings of trout leading up to the Wildlife Fair on May 12th. Fishing conditions are excellent with limits of trout being easily caught. Wet flies in a chartreuse nymph pattern are very popular in last spring due to the stained water. Powerbait in the green and yellow color and salmon eggs are also being reported as successful.
Have a great week of fishing and I hope to see you on the water.
