Fishing Report: Colorado River waters
Even in our warmer weather, anglers are having great success here along the Colorado River.
Below Davis Dam it’s the current you are fishing in. The river is moving about 5- to 7 mph; while you float at about 2 mph these are just close numbers. This current can be a little frustrating at first but once you get the hang of it and catch your first fish, it’s on. The current is now your friend.
The fishing up on Lake Mohave is mostly smallmouth bass and largemouth bass with plastics working the best. I have been getting the word that catfish and striper action is picking up on the lake also.
Below the Davis Dam it’s striper action and rainbow trout. Our local anglers Ernie Calma and his son Kayden were fishing in the casino area and are seen here showing off their catch (above). The trout weighed in at 1.12 pounds and was 13 and 5/8 inches with a couple of the striper weighing in at 2.76 pounds and was 20 5/8 inches. The larger one was 4.94 pounds and 25 1/2 inches. They were fishing in Ernie’s boat and using their favorite lures.
Also near the dam was our local fishing club members with a nice stringer of fish. To show off we have Hailey Dell, Arlan Boyd and Mentor Gary Regan (above). They were fishing from shore using anchovies.
The fishing in the section 12 area or Community Park is a great spot so relax on the beach during the day and try your luck fishing in the evening.
With our warm weather, the evening is getting to be the preferred choice and the bite is pretty good in the evening also. This being said, it’s not a rule, so to say, as our local angler Jim Eeren (above) is showing us that, yes, there are catfish out there. He was fishing from his boat around the morning time and landed this channel cat, which weighed in at 12.54 pounds and was 32 and 1/2 inches. Yep, it was anchovies that brought this cat in.
The word from the Topock Marsh is largemouth bass and channel catfish are not much size as of yet, but the fishing is doing well in that area.
