Mogollon Rim lakes (Willow Springs and Black Canyon)
Willow Springs Lake
Aaron B.: Made a quick day trip up to the Rim on Sunday to see how the lakes are coming along this spring. All I can say is it was GLORIOUS to see so much water in the lakes and snow still on the ground. After last years terrible winter it seems our prayers have been answered.
We stopped by Willow Springs first just to see the lake and it had a healthy number of boats and shore anglers looking for some winter holdover fish. Lake is absolutely overflowing right now and is the highest waterline I have seen in some time. I talked to a couple fishing the shore and they said it was slow but the fish they caught were in the 15-18” range.
Black Canyon Lake
- Aaron B.: Then we drove to Black Canyon for some family fishing. First note, the road is in pretty bad shape. Rutted up, wash board and deep holes along with the steep cuts from where the run off is still flowing. Drive slowly and be careful — my truck was bouncing all over the road. I am hopeful they will be grading the road before the season goes full swing. We wanted to bring our travel trailer up the end of April but are second guessing due to how bad the road was.Black Canyon was full pool, the dock was actually under water, still usable, but you would have to walk through some water to get to shore. We fished from the east side of the lake which was challenging due to the lack of shore space with the water so high, but we found a nice little section. Fishing was slow but steady and from 10 until 2 when we left we managed 8 trout and 2 largemouth bass. All fish were released so another family could enjoy them. Rooster Tails were the hot ticket as the fish were fairly shallow in the water and very aggressive. It was a beautiful day on the Rim and a reminder of how lucky we are to have these resources available to us.
- Larry H.: Great day on Black Canyon Lake, April 7. Marina “Beans” Girard with her first fish .
