Horsethief Basin Lake Survey on August 9th and 10th
The Arizona Game and Fish Department sampled fish populations at Horsethief Basin Lake on August 9th, 2016. Biologists used canoes to electrofish the entire perimeter of the lake. The Department typically uses canoe electrofishing on river systems like the Verde River. However, this method works very well on small shallow lakes such as Horsethief Basin. Electrofishing briefly stuns the fish so biologists can net and hold them in a live well. Fish are then measured, weighed, and then released back into the lake.
Crews electrofished for about half an hour and caught 49 Largemouth Bass and 20 Redear Sunfish. The lake has a healthy population of Largemouth Bass with a lot of fish sampled in the 1 pound range. The lake also contains a stable population of Redear Sunfish with many sampled tipping the scales at over half a pound. The lake is located 6 miles past Crown King and sits at about 6,000 feet in elevation. The lake provides a great opportunity to get out of the valley heat, so get up into the cool pines and catch some fish!
