Woods Canyon Lake
David V. I went to Woods Canyon Lake for a little Tiger Safari this past week (Wed., Nov. 14), having an incredible day on the water! I arrived at the lake around 11:30 to air temps in the mid to upper 30s with wind speeds between 7-10 mph, putting a little chop to the surface waters. Not sure what the water temp was, but there was no icing on the lake edges. There were icicles on minor water sources away from the shoreline, which added to the visual enhancement to these waters.
Three bank fishers and one other person fishing from an inflatable raft.
I fished from a float tube from noon-5 p.m., throwing a black #12 Simi Seal Leech (SSL) with a red, glass bead head, catching three 12-inch rainbows as I worked my way to the north bank. Switching over to a light olive #14 SSL with a cream colored, glass beadhead, fishing became catching for the remainder of the day. Fifteen additional rainbows to hand, ranging in size from 12-14 inches.
Five tigers to hand, ranging in size from 17 inches (image attached) to 12 inches. I’m going to enjoy catching tigers in the future, as they fight quite well, reminding me of a brown without the aerials. (Thx AGFD for stocking this wonderful species!)
So, 18 rainbow and 5 tiger trout for a few hours on the water, with both species putting a mighty bend to my fly rod throughout the day. Definitely good times!
