Pioneer Lake (Peoria)
Pat J.: On Sunday 10-21-18, I caught this 8-1/2 lb channel catfish at Pioneer Park in Glendale.
I first caught a bluegill using a small, cheap fishing rod equipped with 4-pound line, a small No. 12 hook, and a 1/4-inch piece of live worm. I then sectioned the small fish into 1/2-inch pieces of bait. After tossing the head, I hooked the bait onto another rod equipped with a 2/0 circle hook and I cast the bait deep.
In less than 30 minutes, the rod tip started bending. I quickly pulled on the line to further set the hook before the fish could swallow the bait – this kept the hook near it’s lip & kept the line on the outside of it’s mouth. Had the fish swallowed the bait deeper, my 8-pound line would’ve been rubbing against it’s sharp teeth, which would possibly have resulted in a snapped line. After a fun fight and a few minutes, I got to see what I consider to be a pretty large cat caught in a Community lake. Thanks AZGFD for stocking such fun fish in our community lakes !
