Evelyn Hallman Pond (Tempe)
Raman R (angler from Tempe): Yesterday (Saturday, March 2) I was fishing Evelyn Hallman Pond for trout when I came upon a big male and female largemouth. The male was guarding a gravel bed and a group of fisherman told me they had been trying to catch them since the AM. Luckily I had my bass rod in the car, so off I went to grab the rod and a small 2.5-inch finesse paddletail smokey-colored swimbait.
It didn’t take me too long to catch the male — the paddle tail really got him riled up. I kept the male in a rubber net so he wouldn’t swim back and waited for the female to make her move. It seemed like forever, but finally she glided onto the gravel bed. Dropped it on her nose, gave it a couple twitches, and she turned ever so slightly to scoop it up. It was a great fight, ended up landing my biggest largemouth bass for the year so far. I estimated her be nearly 4 pounds.
