Alert: New Canyon Lake boat dock at Palo Verde complete
The new boat dock at the Palo Verde launch ramp at Canyon Lake is complete!
This project was implemented by AZGFD and split-funded with the Tonto National Forest. This is another great example of “user pays,” where the public’s previous purchases of motorboat fuel, watercraft, fishing equipment, fishing licenses and federal-area use fees are being put back into facilities for the public’s enjoyment.
The dock was not only completely replaced, but also extended by 40 feet to provide more boat tie-up space, and widened to better assist with boat launching.
Canyon Lake fishing report
The lake is being stocked with rainbow trout. It was stocked the week of Dec. 10 and is scheduled to be stocked again the week of Jan. 14. Fishing at Canyon Lake, like at other desert impoundment, can be slower for largemouth bass as water temperatures have dipped well into the 50s. There are yellow bass present at Canyon and anglers can catch them using dropshot-rigged nightcrawlers or silver spoons jigged in deeper water (20-30 feet).
Shore anglers can try fishing off of Acacia day-use recreational area where habitat is placed near the buoys. Shore anglers should also try their luck at the newly renovated Boulder Recreational Area. This recreational area is restricted from motorized watercrafts and is a great place to kayak and there is also a fishing pier. During our recent fish survey we caught quite a few largemouth bass in the back of the cove.
